Opening documents for reading or editing

You can open a document from your places list for reading or editing. When you open it for editing, it is checked out from the place. The application required to open the document must be available on your computer.

Perform an action described in the following table.

Goal Action
Open a document for reading

Right-click the document and click Open.

Or, if the place property Prompt to check out documents when double-clicked is selected, perform the following steps:

  1. Double-click the document.
  2. At the prompt, select Open the document without checking out.
  3. Click OK.
Open a document for editing Right-click the document and click Edit.

Or, perform the following steps:

  1. Double-click the document. If you do not see a prompt, the document opens for editing. Otherwise, continue to the next step.
  2. If the place property Prompt to check out documents when double-clicked is selected, at the prompt, select Check out the document for editing.
  3. If you always want to check out documents for editing when you double-click them, select Always check out documents when double-clicked.
  4. Click OK.
