See a project evolve at Power Renovations

Power Renovations manufactures power tools that are sold to home improvement stores, such as Renovations. This sample walk-through highlights how the development, manufacturing, and marketing departments at Power Renovations use the Team Place template to create a home for their project.

The problem: How to align development, manufacturing, and marketing goals successfully

Power Renovations, like any other manufacturing facility, struggles with merging development and process initiatives at the right point in the project. On one hand, product development is key to gaining market share and maintaining a competitive edge. On the other hand, new product development initiatives can lead to process issues that significantly increase manufacturing costs. These process and quality issues must be taken into account at the right point in the project to affect how the product is developed. The consequences of not taking these issues into account early enough in the project are as follows:

The solution: Connect development, manufacturing, and marketing goals using the Team Place template

The number one project at Power Renovations focuses on designing a new ergonomic power tool line. It is critical that this project is successful. Power Renovations is already losing market share to a main competitor that has already introduced an ergonomic power tool line. The core project team assigned to work on this project consists of team members in product development, manufacturing, and marketing.

Meet the team and see how the Team Place template is used to create a place for this project to evolve.

Meet the team
This cross-functional team will pull their strengths together to ensure that the right designs are pursued. These designs must satisfy the needs of the customer and provide consistent manufacturing conditions within the control limits established in this project.

Connect the team to project priorities and expectations
Rebecca creates a place using the Team Place template, customizes the Welcome page to display project objectives to the team, and creates a blog post to set team expectations.

Debate designs and brainstorm to find manufacturing solutions
Rebecca and Bill use the blog to face the first project hurdle collectively. By discussing the manufacturing concerns in a blog, a plan is developed to provide the team with a preliminary assessment of the design options.

Author content collectively across departments
The core and extended team members use the wiki to begin development work, collaborate on the first technical report, and more. The wiki allows the team and management to monitor progress, get information, and modify content in a flash.

Get approvals on design decisions to gain company resources
Rebecca and Bill use the input from the wiki to write the first technical report. This report will be used by management to determine if the team continues with this project, what resources will be given to this project, and to give the thumbs up or thumbs down on proposed design decisions.

Complete the project and leverage project successes in future endeavors
The team successfully completes the ErgoLine project. From the connections made to information and departments in this project, the team and management see new ways to use places at Power Renovations.
