Client installation and new client features
This topic describes new client installation improvements and related new features.
IBM® Lotus® Notes® 8.0.2 adds support of the Widgets and Live Text feature on the supported Linux platforms. In Notes 8.0.1, Widgets and Live Text was available on the supported Windows platforms only.
To take advantage of startup performance improvements made to the Notes 8.0.2 client standard configuration, upgrade your Notes client systems to Java® 6 SR1.
The Notes Allclient install kit for Notes basic configuration has been removed permanently effective as of this pre-beta 8 drop. To install Notes basic configuration you can use the Notes-only basic configuration install kit. Also note that because the Notes Allclient install kit for Notes basic configuration is no longer available, Domino Designer basic configuration is also no longer available. The Domino Administrator is not affected by this change but is now available only in the Notes Allclient standard configuration install kit.
Note that you can update your existing Notes Allclient install kit for Notes basic configuration to Notes Allclient standard configuration by simply running the Allclient install kit.
Notes 8.0.1 introduces the Widgets and Live Text feature, including Live Text and the widgets catalog -- The Widgets and Live Text feature is installed automatically with Notes. Using new IBM® Lotus® Domino® policy or Notes plugin_customization.ini file settings, an administrator can control which users see the My Widgets sidebar panel and toolbar, as well as various levels of access to Widgets and Live Text functionality. End users can act on Live Text and, if allowed by policy or preference, see and add widgets in a My Widgets sidebar panel and/or Notes sidebar. Power users can create, edit, and deploy widgets for end users, using supplied wizards to configure widgets based on a Notes form, view, or document or a Web page, feed, or Google Gadget™. Administrators control access to a central widget catalog (based on a new template that is installed with the Domino server) using policy settings (or preferences) and standard application ACLs, as well as widget categories.
Server-managed improvements have been made in controlling user access to Notes client feature install and update sites. The administrator controls which users can enable user-initiated install and update using the Eclipse update manager UI in Notes (File - Application - Install) using a Domino provisioning policy or a plugin_customization.ini file setting.
Notes install and upgrade-based changes for Vista and XP SP2 -- Microsoft® Windows® directory permissions have been modified to accommodate security improvements made for Windows Vista and Windows XP SP2.
- Notes installation uses an Eclipse-style install manifest (install.xml) and update site (updateSite.zip) to control feature installation -- Lotus Notes client installation continues to be available using an executable or binary, Smart Upgrade, or scripted install but as of Notes 8.0, it now incorporates Lotus Expeditor architecture, based on Eclipse, and enables additional extension of both supplied and custom features.
- You can install custom or third-party features for Notes users -- You can allow users to install custom or third-party Eclipse features but you must first sign the new feature and establish acceptable responses to unsigned or untrusted feature provisioning.
- You can enable Notes users to access IBM® WebSphere Portal components, for example, to use composite applications that contain portlets -- This is an optional task needed only for clients that require access to portlets from their Notes environment. You must install a server client installer on the portal server and configure a home portal account setting for the Notes user.
